Photovoltaics (PV) is the production of electrical energy from sunlight. So called 1st generation PV, based on crystalline silicon solar cells remains the workhorse of the PV industry with over 90% market share. While many thin-film technologies, often called 2nd generation PV, are being developed and a few are in-market. 1st generation technologies will remain the most economical and efficient for at least the next decade.

We expect some radical technology advancements in the future that will improve the efficiency and cost of photovoltaic power significantly. We expect that when this occurs, possibly at some time a decade or so from now, that completely new 3rd generation PV technology will gradually dominate the market.
