In the early 1980’s, the Solar Energy Research Group at the University of Sydney developed an all-glass evacuated tubular collector for solar hot water heating. Known globally as ‘the Sydney tube’, this product now dominates, with an estimated 90% market share, the world’s largest market for solar hot water systems – China. Technology development has continued within the Solar Energy Research Group, with recent focus into improvements to the solar selective surface used on solar hot water systems to absorb the sun’s energy.

USSS has worldwide exclusive rights to the patents that cover the Sydney tube and the solar selective surfaces developed at the University of Sydney. USSS maintains close links with the Solar Energy Research Group at the University of Sydney and with them we are continuing to develop new solar hot water heating technologies suitable for both evacuated tube and air-stable flat plate solar hot water heater systems.
Evacuated tube solar hot water collectors are manufactured by Himin Solar Energy Group in China using the advanced selective coating technology developed at the University of Sydney and licensed from USSS.

Himin started its business with this product and has built an impressive manufacturing capacity over the past 10 years to become the world’s largest manufacturer of evacuated tube solar hot water collectors.
